Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdo?an has said his government is planning to build a huge mosque on ?stanbul’s highest hill in the Çaml?ca district on the Anatolian side of the city near a prominent TV tower that will be seen from all parts of the city.
Erdo?an, speaking at the opening ceremony for a cultural center linked to the Üsküdar Municipality on Tuesday night, listed mosques that are either being renovated or are going to be built. His remarks came hours after he attended the opening ceremony following renovations of Fatih Mosque in ?stanbul.
The prime minister said Mimar Sinan Mosque in Ata?ehir, which is expected to be completed by July, is a “great mosque on a 6,000 square meter plot.” He added that there are four to five mosques that are being built similarly to it in its vicinity.
Erdo?an said the most important development is a new mosque to be built in the Çaml?ca district by the TV tower, occupying nearly 15,000 square meters of a plot. He added that architects have come to the end in drafting the project of the mosque. He predicted that in two months, the works in this regard will be kicked off. He noted that there will be other facilities under the mosque and it is designed in a way that will be seen from every corner in ?stanbul.
