Police came at night
The Ankara municipality has waited the Feast of Sacrifice to launched the construction of a controversial road project crossing through the Middle East Technical University (ODTÜ) campus. They knew most students would not be in the camp these days, due to holiday.
And they acted then: construction teams and heavy duty machines entered the ODTÜ campus on Friday night.
The police were escorting the workers and floodlight projectors while a helicopter was used to lighten the construction site. The students were alerted via social nets and gathered at the campus, but police immediately attacked them. Tear gas were thrown at students and water cannons were used.
The controversial plan would mean the destruction of some 3,000 trees, with two roads cutting through ODTÜ land.

Intervenendo ad un dibattito organizzato dal comitato inglese contro la guerra, Mehmet, un profugo afghano, ha ricordato che “nell’assurdità violenta e drammatica di questa guerra condotta da Usa e Gran Bretagna contro il mio paese, c’è una cosa che rende ancora più tragico quello che sta succedendo: bin Laden è un prodotto del vostro mondo, di quel mondo occidentale e civilizzato che oggi spara missili contro la popolazione inerme e ridotta alla fame dell’Afghanistan”.
Ha ragione Mehmet, si è detto e scritto ormai tante volte. Ma la memoria dei “potenti”, come si sa, è corta. Cortissima quella di Tony Blair, alleato di ferro del presidente americano George W. Bush, che promette di “distruggere il terrorismo in maniera permanente e totale” e che lancia la sua “fatwa” civile e occidentale contro bin Laden e il regime dei Taleban che lo proteggono, “un governo retrogrado, che non rispetta i diritti umani e che tratta le donne senza alcun rispetto e in maniera violenta e repressiva”. Anche con i soldi inglesi.
Kurds against wall of shame
The ruling AKP government has sped up the building of the unlawful wall between Mardin’s Nusaybin district and the Qamishlo city in West Kurdistan. The construction companies building the wall are kept secret and the municipality of Nusaybin is provided with no information about the wall being built.
Speaking to ANF about the ‘wall of shame’, mayor of Nusaybin Ay?e Gökkan remarked that the wall is being built at a time when the Kurdish people expect the government to remove wire fences and demine the border region.
Calling attention to the refusal of such walls across the world, Gökkan reminded of the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, and Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdo?an’s ‘wall of shame’ comment for the wall Israel built between Gaza and West Bank.
