On an old message from Gaza
Now Spring 2025
a hand appears out of the dark
the dark waits
expecting the voice
to follow
the hand reaches into the dark
as if – a surgeon – searching
for the one organ that
guarantees life
but life itself is not in this room
it has fallen asleep
in all this rhetoric
only the silence secures the agreement
of the countless muted ghosts who
haunt this space
they have planted their stories
like shards of sharp glass
waiting for an endless winter
to end

of the dark
it is not your own hand not even
a stranger’s hand you might recognise
it has come to welcome you
to a Silence that
you thought you knew
only now you realise
you had long been asleep
and in this dark
this is where
you will now wake up
without words
without a friend in the world
with no one to grieve you
with everyone already dead
you will now wake
just as their missile
strikes the
ancient architecture
of an almost-human
mind
but ruthlessly,
mindlessly
inhuman
you can do nothing
