It was the Autumn of the Fences

and blood flowed freely.

 

So freely it froze the fragile faces of

the small ones and the innocent ones

and the military clocks on all the main streets

hammered out that same-old cold-blooded song

for this new century

 

and all the seasons rebelled against the curse

of humanity

 

and while we slept in our loveless beds

War woke and a roomful of dark hearts

went out before dawn and stole a sinking-world away.

 

This is a time now to wonder

at the wonder

of it all?

the wonderful why of it all?

 

Yet, know, the Shop-Windows-of-Night still shatter

(as if somehow surprised)

and later, our President in his tin-hat (or his armless ghost)

is seen always shooting stars at a heartless sky.

 

The News now, already grown old and lazy and fat, lounges

around street corners with its jackbooted-louts

waiting for history to happen.

 

While here, let me tell you, all we can do is kneel

at the foot of our most suspicious saints

and beneath the silence of the statues and

the lies we tell each other

 

and no matter where you live now

nobody will complain when a whole century,

a whole country, a whole continent

goes bankrupt and is left to rot.

 

What a world to wake to,

i tell my granddaughter “Close-to-God”

not even 12 weeks old!

 

Here is a world wretched and cold-blooded

like a winter endlessly at war.

 

Here is a winter like the Irish knew in ‘45 or ‘47.

 

A winter never to be remembered nor forgotten.

For the hunger here is no longer famine nor futility.

Now it is called starvation and government policy

and the politics of revenge, much like the sound

of glass breaking on a new-old century

 

and behold, there

are those now who call the night day

and those that call this darkness light

 

and they have risen from their graveyards

to come haunt a disappearing world.

It could have been summer here sometime. Or almost.

A childhood ago.

 

On the radio i hear the voice of Nelson Mandela.

 

Each new day now a hundred will die or a thousand

or a hundred thousand

while the rest of us bury our shame

like our heads

in the sands of stupidity and greed.

It floods the streets and soon stops.

Wars have come and gone.

But War remains. Starvation spreads.

It is written like

a scar or a wound where no one can read it.

We will move heaven and earth to

fatten his many selfish bellies.

and religions turn to stone in our long-dead mouths

and there is no longer hope, nor winter, nor summer again.

 

Rain falls, wounds fester.

But there is always Spring, those who have not yet died

still say.

There was peacetime once. They imagine.

So the people must pray.

How come the safest of places on Earth is your head buried in the sand?

How come you continued to elect your savage executioners.

Choose to walk heedlessly to the slaughterhouse?

Once there were rumours of war and the

madness that breeds war and the madmen

and the madwomen that breed war and their loveless children

famine, disease, pestilence.

 

Now watch it all burn.

 

You have been invited to the Circus, to the Stadium

to the Camp and to the Ovens.

The price of your bad-faith in the mirror

is the entry fee.

 

So

 

watch it all

as if you were a muted flame begging the spark

to free your life

as if your friends were only food or fuel

to feed on

 

as we warm our hands wickedly

around this burning forest fire.
