“Most of the power of authoritarianism is freely given.”

Timothy Snyder (‘On Tyranny’)

1

He comes through his whirlwind

of hate

like a force to be reckoned with.

His belt like a child-eating snake

curling its lip into the sneer

of power.

i run the length of our

collective poverty

to escape the blows

i hide beneath tables

that never ever saw

a book open

or a pen poised

or a clean sheet

of pure white paper.

2

Years later i still wonder

how god could abandon a species that

never even knew its own mind?

Years later we will not understand

those who did not flee

those who had no place to hide

those who bent beneath the belt

beneath the sneer, beneath the petty

power of giants

as they stomped on our dreams.

3

And then, i understand.

Even this servile screen with its

sycophants and fawning followers

understands this.

Even this rabid radio with its bootlickers,

brownnosers, its flunkies and toadies, its slaves,

suck-ups and lickspittles, understands.

These minions, henchmen and

lackeys, they all

understand

4

a man who will beat his children

with brutality

is just one more tyrant among many

like

this fascist

of the airwaves

the one who never managed to find

a refuge from the belt

or the snarling sneer and

so was

forced to become President

of All and Everything

and Nothing.

5

So we listen now to

this bully

with his armed armada

of beatings and belts.

The one still terrified

of the whirlwind

that still eats the smile

from his frozen face festering

with this fleshing-eating virus

called Tyranny.

Alternative Quote – a Christmas message from the Grinch?

Jimmy Kimmel (US comic)

“We are in Hollywood. We are 2600 miles away from Washington DC where we are still all digesting the Burger King speech tonight. And what a speech it wasn’t, huh? I can’t believe America missed an all new ‘Will Trent’ [TV show] for this one. It was, um, it was angry, right? It was an angry speech. The theme of tonight’s speech was all foreigners are murderers. And Trump just…he said zero illegal aliens have been allowed into the United States on his watch, but the door is always open to those who come in legally to be his next wife. So that’s something. He bragged about ending DEI. He bragged about kicking 2 million people off food stamps. It was like a Christmas message from the Grinch….”
