Deadly blast hits Iraqi army base
Police sources say suicide bomber targets army headquarters northeast of Baghdad, killing 10 soldiers and injuring 25
A suicide bomber has attacked an Iraqi army unit in Baqouba, Diyala province, killing 10 soldiers and injuring 25 others.
Monday’s blast took place near an army headquarters in Kanaan, 70km northeast of Baghdad, two sources in Diyala’s operations command said.
However, Muthana al-Timimi, head of the security committee of the Diyala provincial council, gave the casualty figures as five dead and 10 wounded and said the blast was caused by a large quantity of explosives placed near the headquarters.
According to a security official, the building was totally destroyed and that it was feared that more victims could be buried under the rubble.
Diyala provincial council spokeswoman said emergency workers were frantically trying to rescue victims from beneath the rubble.
She also said that a second bomb was discovered nearby but diffused by officials before it could explode.
