Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdo?an on Wednesday received a mandate from President Abdullah Gül to form the new government as the chairman of the Justice and Development Party (AK Party), which secured 50 percent of the national vote in the June 12 elections.
Erdo?an received the mandate during his visit to the Çankaya presidential palace on Wednesday. An official statement from the Presidency said the president gave AK Party leader and ?stanbul deputy Erdo?an the mandate to form the 61st government of the Turkish Republic.
Since the AK Party, in a record victory, won the support of close to 50 percent of voters in the elections and won 327 seats in Parliament, Erdo?an will be able to form a single-party government, embarking on a third consecutive term as the ruling party.
