Two more skulls discovered during digging at former headquarters of JITEM in Diyarbak?r
Two more skulls were discovered during Thursday’s digging at former headquarters of JITEM (secret body within the gendarmerie said to be responsible for hundreds of unsolved murders).
Six more skulls were found on Wednesday near the basement of the former J?TEM building in Diyarbak?r. The site is also next to a former prison.
It is well known that many people did not see light again after entering the J?TEM building.
The six skulls and several pieces of bone were found by laborers who were digging at the site to lay pipes in the historic ?çkale neighborhood of the Sur district.
The unearthed bones and skulls will be sent to the Council of Forensic Medicine (ATK) after being examined by a prosecutor. After DNA tests are taken in ?stanbul, it will be attempted to establish the identities of the bodies by taking samples from the relatives of missing persons in Turkey’s Southeast.
The Diyarbak?r Prosecutor’s Office on Thursday commissioned a specially-authorized public prosecutor to investigate the case and ordered the continuation of excavation work in the area in search of more bones.
The ?çkale neighborhood used to house a prison, courthouse and J?TEM headquarters until 1999. It was subsequently handed over the Culture and Tourism Ministry in the same year.

Human Rights Association (?HD) Diyarbak?r Branch Chairman Raci Bilici said the ?HD will process the applications from the relatives of the missing persons and file requests with the authorities for more excavations in the region.
