Irish Republican Marian Price arrested
Veteran republican Marian Price has been arrested by the PSNI. She was arrested in west Belfast today and taken to Antrim interrogation centre. She parted with Sinn Fein around the time of the Good Friday Agreement in 1998, and is now a spokesperson for the hardline 32 County Sovereignty Movement as well as a spokesperson for the Irish Republican Prisoners Welfare Association.
Marian and her sister Dolours played a prominent role in the Provisional IRA’s armed struggle and, along with Sinn Fein’s Gerry Kelly, received a 20 year sentence in 1973.
They immediately went on hunger strike in a campaign to be repatriated to a prison in Ireland. The hunger strike lasted over 200 days, because the hunger-strikers were brutally force-fed by prison authorities.
In November, 2009 she was arrested and interrogated for three days in connection with an attack on the Massereene Barracks in which two British soldiers were shot dead.
On Easter Monday, she attended the 32 County Sovereignty Movement’s annual Easter commemoration in Derry, where a statement was read out by a masked member of the Real IRA.

Bobby Sands e nove suoi compagni si lasciarono morire di fame nel carcere di Long Kesh, nei pressi di Belfast. I detenuti dell’Ira avevano 5 richieste : Il diritto di indossare i propri vestiti e non l’uniforme carceraria; il diritto di astenersi dai lavori penali, il diritto alla libera associazione, il diritto ad attività ricreative ed educative in accordo con le autorità carcerarie e il ripristino del condono della pena (venuto meno a causa della “dirty protest”). Oggi quel carcere è chiuso, vuoto. Ma resta il simbolo, con i suoi «H-blocks», blocchi H, della repressione inglese su quel pezzo di isola verde. Il simbolo dell’ostinazione con cui la Gran Bretagna ha continuato (e, seppure in modo diverso, continua) a passare letteralmente sopra i cadaveri di migliaia di persone pur di mantenere il controllo di quelle sei contee: anche quando (come del resto ha riconosciuto il governo di John Major, nel 1994) non aveva più interessi «né strategici, né economici, né egoistici » su quel territorio.
