Foza Yusif: Turkey and ISIS fear the power of women

PYD co-presidency council member Foza Yusif said that the attacks of the brutal forces such as Turkey and ISIS cannot force women to take a step back from their will and the struggle for freedom.

PYD co-presidency council member Foza Yusif said that the attacks of the brutal forces such as Turkey and ISIS cannot force women to take a step back from their will and the struggle for freedom.

PYD co-presidency council member Foza Yusif said that the best response and revenge to all the massacres of women is to develop women’s organization, to protect the revolution and women’s gains. “Women in the areas of the Autonomous Administration of North-East Syria becomes a hope for all women of the world. The gains here are also the achievements of all women. All women should also support this revolution.”

The invasion Afrin carried out by the Turkish state on 20 January 2018, targeted women in Rojava. The Turkish state and all its mercenaries, beginning with ISIS, are attacking especially women. During the occupation of Afrin, the lifeless body of Barin Kobanê was violated by the Turkish state. On 12 October 2019, while the attacks on Serêkaniyê and Girê Spî continued, Hevrîn Xelef, the Secretary General of the Syrian Future Party, was brutally murdered. During the three-year occupation in Afrin, at least 67 women were murdered, 68 women were raped.

While North-East Syrian Kurdish and Arab women were massacred by Turkish state mercenaries in occupied Afrin, women in Serêkaniyê and Girê Spî as well as in the areas of the Autonomous Administration of North-East Syria were killed by the Turkish army and ISIS attacks.

Three leading women, Kongra Star executives, were murdered by Turkish state’s drone attack on Kobani on 23 June 2019. ISIS kidnapped and murdered two Arab women who took part in Autonomous Administration activities in Deshisha, Hesekê, on 22 January.

Democratic Union Party (PYD) co-presidency member, Foza Yusif, spoke to ANF about Turkey and ISIS targeting North-East Syrian women.

Yusif pointed out that Turkey today leads the male domination in the Middle East and added that this is why such a sexist and militaristic government targets the Rojava Revolution.

Yusif said: “The women’s revolution here is the antidote to racism. The Turkish state and the forces under its leadership target most women in Rojava Kurdistan and North-East Syria, as women played a leading role in the development of the revolution in Rojava and the Autonomous Administration of North-East Syria. Today, women are playing a leading role in the development of a social revolution. The Turkish state knows that women are the main force that sustains this revolution, which is why they are its privileged target.”

Noting that the Turkish state is afraid of the development of women, Foza Yusif said that Turkey sees the women’s revolution and the social development carried out in Rojava as a threat. “Turkey sees what is being done here, and fears that this model would spread and reach the Middle East and Turkey society. They want to strike and weaken the women’s revolution by targeting women in every way, and with this they want to impose a reactionary and dark life on women.”

Pointing out that Arab women played a leading revolutionary role in the fight against ISIS and the Arab renaissance, Foza Yusif said that the massacre of two women from the Autonomous Administration activities on 22 January was a blow to their role. “Arab women played a historical and leading role in the struggle against ISIS and in the development of the Autonomous Administration institution following the liberation of their regions. The most revolutionary force in Arab society is female power. Arab women have developed a great dynamism in order to collapse the ISIS system and its darkness in cultural and social areas. The fact that thousands of women can take to the streets and lead the struggle shows that there is a great power in Arab women and society. This power is growing and getting stronger by the day. Our enemies targeted two of our female friends because of what they represented in terms of social change under the leadership of women.”

Yusif said that the attacks of the brutal forces such as Turkey and ISIS cannot force women to take a step back from their will and the struggle for freedom. She added: “The Rojava Revolution and the Autonomous Administration, provided a first for women to establish their own organizations, make their own decisions, and show their will to participate in all areas of life. Such a mentality and will has developed among women in our region; it does not bow to any attack and does not step down. On the contrary, women’s insistence on the search for a free life is increasing.”

Yusif stated that the best response and revenge to all massacres of women is to develop women’s organization, to protect the revolution and women’s gains, and added: “We will also increase our struggle to protect the women’s system, the Autonomous Administration system and the gains women have achieved. We will never step down. Our demand for freedom and struggle increased. It is our basic work to improve women’s organization, action and freedom. The place of our martyred female friends will not remain empty; thousands of women will take their places. Our enemy should know that with these bloody and dirty methods, they cannot break our will. There is nothing worse than living like a slave. Therefore, no cruelty and hardship can stop us.”

Emphasizing that women in the areas of the Autonomous Administration of North East Syria are a hope for all women of the world, Foza Yusif added that the achievements here are the gains of all women. Underlining that all women should also support this revolution, Yusif said: “There is a great attack against women worldwide. They want to dissolve the Women’s Liberation Movement and stop the change and transformation in our region. Therefore, our call to the women of the world is this: Let’s break the attacks of the male-dominated system, the nationalism and sexism that are imposed on us. Let’s protect our revolution together.”
